How far are the representations realistic of teens in Hollyoaks?

Hello, I am an A2 media studies student currently researching and working towards my critical research exam in January.
The question I am investigating is; How far are the representations of teens realistic in Hollyoaks?
Any opinions/ideas on this topic would be greatly appreciated :)
Thanks!

  1. I think that most of the storylines involving the teenage characters deal with real issues in a good way. Especially Hannahs bulemia story, I think it really showed the effects of the illness in a way that would impact the audience.

  2. I think soaps in general, particularly Hollyoaks portray teenagers too dramatically. They are usually high in drama, in sexually active relationships at young ages and involve drug taking and other activities that real life teens already struggle with. Having these actors showing these behaviours adds a lot of pressure for teenagers and may make them feel like that is what other teens their age are doing therefore they will feel they have to behanve that way too. I think the issues shown are intensified and not necessarily a picture of real life though these things do occur.

  3. I think that the actually issues that are put into the storylines are really relevant to loads of teenagers because it uses different ones like drugs and stuff.. but I think that sometimes the way they are overdramatised or underdramatised could alienate the audience that they've gained through the issue. It's never going to be a direct representation of an individuals problem but having a storyline on it makes it better to relate to.
